Spring break in Chicago usually means an escape from an ever-lingering winter. Regardless the weather, April and May are a great time to get away to enjoy some family fun. But where to go? Each family is different in how they vacation so we broke it down by category. What are some of your favorite places to vacation? Tell us in the comments.
The Foodie Family
Destination: Charleston, SC.
A trip to this charming Southern town is delightful. Beautiful historic buildings, pristine beaches, and warmer climates – there is a lot to love about Charleston. One thing that really brings people down is the amazing restaurants. Many chefs, like Sean Brock, build on their love for the low country by producing amazing southern cuisine with local ingredients. The Eater 38 is a great place to start to find restaurants that are a great fit for your family.
The Sports Loving Family
Destination: Boston, MA
Sports lovers really don’t have to travel outside of Chicago for a true experience in a sports town. But for those who can put aside rivalries for a few days, Boston is a great place to visit. Catch a baseball game at Fenway Park, the oldest MLB park, and rub in the fact that the Cubs won it all this year. Catch a Celtics game and on off-game days head to the TD Garden to tour the sports museum on the 5th and 6th floor. Runners will want to find the Boston Marathon route and run a few miles towards the area where the finish line usually is for an adrenaline rush.
The Beach Bound Family
Destination: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Warning, spring break in Fort Lauderdale can get crazy, but a little less so than neighboring Miami (If you are looking for calm, try Sarasota on the Southwest side) but it’s also a super fun spot. Hollywood beach is a fun spot full of great restaurants and swim shops, perfect for walking around, swimming or soaking in the sun. Dania beach is less crowded, and makes for a more serene beach experience with plenty of beautiful views to soak in.
The Always Learning Family
Destination: Washington D.C.
There is always something to see, do or learn about in Washington D.C. For history buffs, the Smithsonian is the perfect place to learn about everything from solar power to American ballet. Of course a visit to the national mall, Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and the White House are mandatory. The National Geographic museum, Newseum, and National Air and Space museums are all fun places to visit as well, especially with kids. Georgetown is a fun place to walk around after sightseeing for great shopping and good eats.
